The Feral Truth About “Running In Real Quick” (you will absolutely not be running in real quick)

The Feral Caregiver Raccoon getting ready to leave the house.

The Feral Truth:

You used to be able to leave the house casually.

Remember that?

Keys.

Wallet.

Phone.

Done.

Now?

Leaving the house requires the level of planning normally associated with a small military operation.

You don’t “run errands” anymore.

You prepare for scenarios.

Because the second you leave the house, your brain starts running simulations like:

What if they get tired?

What if they need meds?

What if the line is long?

What if there’s nowhere to sit?

What if someone suddenly decides this is the perfect time to have a medical situation in the middle of Target?

So now your “quick trip” includes:

  • medications

  • backup medications

  • snacks

  • water

  • paperwork

  • chargers

  • tissues

  • a jacket because one building is apparently set to arctic temperatures for no reason

And somehow?

You still forget something important.

Every. Single. Time.

Then there’s the actual outing itself.

Because you’re not shopping.

You’re monitoring.

Watching energy levels.

Watching breathing.

Watching moods.

Watching for signs that things are going downhill.

Meanwhile everyone around you is just casually buying candles and oat milk like life isn’t one inconvenience away from total chaos.

And honestly?

Good for them.

Must be nice.

By the time you get back home, you’re exhausted like you just returned from a cross-country road trip instead of a 20-minute store run.

And people who aren’t doing this?

They don’t understand why simple things feel hard now.

But caregiving changes the math of everyday life.

Nothing is simple anymore because your brain never gets to stop calculating risk.

That’s the Feral Truth.

Yours in chaos,

~Kari, The Feral Caregiver
